Abstract

No dia 20 de abril de 1903, o então auxiliar científico do Museu Etnológico de Berlim Theodor Koch-Grünberg deixava a Alemanha rumo ao Brasil para a realização de uma expedição etnográfica à região dos rios Ucayali e Purus. Seu objetivo era a observação da cultura dos povos indígenas do grupo pano e a obtenção de objetos etnográficos para os acervos dos museus. Depois de mais de trinta dias de viagem de Hamburgo ao Brasil, o pesquisador chegou finalmente a Manaus no dia primeiro de junho. O baixo nível das águas e notícias dos conflitos sangrentos entre comerciantes, exploradores da borracha e indígenas deixaram-no apreensivo. Ele optou, então, por postergar sua meta inicial e aventurar-se na região do alto rio Negro, onde posteriormente, tendo desistido definitivamente da viagem ao Purus, realizaria sua expedição etnográfica
