Abstract

Financed by Robert Lowie, Curt Nimuendajú travelled through the Brazilian states of Bahia, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo from November 1938 to April 1939, hoping to carry out research among the northern Jê. This article analyses a set of five unpublished letters sent by Nimuendaju in the context of these travels, aiming not only to present the ethnographic information obtained by the ethnographer on the Indigenous people of the Northeast, particularly the Kamakã, Maxacali and Botocudo, but also to reflect on his relationship with Robert Lowie, his main intellectual interlocutor.
