Taking recourse both to ethnographic material and to literary criticism, this essay is a discourse about the Devil in his or her Brazilian appearance. The immanence of this figure in the various"compromises" and"dilemmas" that characterize Brazilian self-images suggests that its domestication can only be achieved if the original utopian foundations of the land, with their emphasis on"discovery" and"captivity", are cast aside in favor of an"anti-caesurist" approach to Brazilian society that sees it as an historical emergence in its own right.Downloads
