Abstract

Research and experimental therapy involving stem cells is a topic that overtakes academic discussions in Biomedicine. It becomes current issue in public debate because of constant covering of successful achievements in mass media covery. This article analyses a repetitive representation found in stem cell research and in projects of cell therapy: the use of human body as a resource. The context is the new interdisciplinary field regarding cell therapy, regenerative medicine and bioengineering. This inquiry is based on interviews to scientists (professors and graduate students) participants in research projects involving adult and embryonic stem cells in a University. The hypothesis is: the extraction, manipulation and re-introduction of bodily substances in the same subject brings reconfiguration of bodily indentity and personhood. Stem cells are treatment sources that take part of a tissue economy with bodily material circulation among laboratories, hospitals, storage areas and bodies.
