Abstract

In"societies against the State" (Clastres, 2003), the position of a political leader is not founded in a coercitive power, which transcends the network of social relations. It does not mean, however, that we could neglect processes of differentiation and prestige acquisition; in other words, processes of"personification of power" (Godelier & Strathern, 1991). This article aims to analyse such processes considering the production of great warriors (the so-called morubixabas) among the Brazilian coastal Tupi of XVIth and XVIIth centuries. This production is seen as depending on practices of nomination and scarification, once they used to objectify relationships, giving expressive forms to agency.
