Abstract

Concepts as culture and politics, as well as forms of classification derived from them as 'to be polític' or 'to be cultural', are used by social actors and conform their organizations and forms of performance in a singular way. From a comparative analysis among ethnographic searches about groups of Bahia (Brazil) organized on the basis of relations with what is called black culture, the proposal of this article is to reflect on the positions and conceptions of their leaders in relation to the concepts of culture and politics and, consequently, on what it means to be activist in each one of them. The ethnographic approaches and the comparison among them turn the practice of cultural groups more intelligible by refusing the explanations based in their 'lacks': of political consciousness, sense of collectivity, social change proposals etc.
