This article deals with some issues addressed by Pierre Clastres about the specific character of the exchange of goods in primitive society and its linkage to the war. It begins with a general discussion about the relevance of the author’s ideas on the ‘against-economic’ sense of these exchanges, considering the widespread but little studied phenomenon of the exchanges of goods in indigenous Amazonia. It highlights the irreducibility of such exchanges to trade and its role in the formation of regional networks of articulation. Then, the article approaches the relationship between such exchanges and the war from the perspective of Southern Aparai and Wayana (Caribbean). Based on a narrative about their mutual peace and at multicommunal feasts, it addresses the debate between Clastres and Lévi- Strauss on the priority of war or exchange, to show how the coexistence of two phenomena is thought from the Aparai and Wayana perspective.Downloads
