Abstract

In this paper I take for object of my reflection missionary anthropology.I seek to understand its intellectual and practical relations withissues raised by academic anthropology. With a background civilizingproject, the missionary-ethnographer stood at his field of observation as a“translator” between different worlds. But the way he did his work and theway it was read by his peers was subject to transformation due to the changinghistorical contexts. In this article we aim to describe that process, which,in our view, was marked by at least three major phases: the missionary /author, the missionary / oppressor and proper missionary translator. Consideringthe missionaries as “translators”, we will attempt to elucidate theways in which their discourses were appropriated and produced native differences.In order to do so, we will revisit part of the analysis produced onthe Salesian ethnographic writings about indigenous peoples in Brazil between1920 and 1970 we recently published.
