In this article I intend to discuss some of the meanings of theOrisha Exu in Candomblé and Umbanda, the two most popular models ofAfrican religions in Brazil. I argue that this deity allows a reading of Brazilianculture by its character of “cultural mediator”. Exu in Brazilian societyhave a fluid role, a “non-place”, which makes it a good beginning to thinkingabout some important issues of national identity, such as the Braziliansyncretism and miscegenation.Downloads
