Abstract

This article analyzes the repossession of the terrain knew as Pinheirinho in São José dos Campos, São Paulo – Brazil. The land was the residence of approximately six thousand homeless persons. The ownership restoring process was not only a violent action of the state government, but also mobilized many political world views that collided with dramatic proportions.
Recovering past ethnographies and comparing them to recent urban studies and the current neoliberal context, this analysis offers an anthropological view of the conflict and reconstitutes the symbolic background that legitimized the government’s action and allowed an open confrontation between government’s forces and occupiers.
