Abstract

This article discusses the role played by different agents in the production of musical recordings for the purpose of ethnographic research. The empirical reference for the discussion is the process of recording a CD among actors involved with the so-called “Ukrainian music” in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Following a brief description of the musical manifestations that were the focus of the research, this article discusses the role played by different actors (human and nonhuman) involved in producing the CD: the researcher, funding institutions, technical staff and digital technologies employed. The role of the anthropologist in a process of cultural production is thus presented as non-neutral, since his activity on the field imprints the ethics and the critical bias of the discipline on the materials recorded, changing its substance according to the methodology and theoretical point of view of the researcher.
