This paper analyzes the relationship between professional practice and forms of engagement in the defense of “social and collective causes”. Taking the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul as the empirical universe, we examine the trajectory of lawyers who work professionally in defense of racial equality and do the translation of legal knowledge in benefit of the ethnic-racial causes. The main issues that stand out concern, on the one hand, how legal activism becomes a resource for mobilization in the defense of certain causes and, on the other hand, the role of the agents’ itineraries in the construction of professional principles and racial identities.Downloads
