Abstract

In this paper we will analyze the Lafcadio Hear’s essay; With Kyushu Students; component of the book Out of The East: Reveries and Studies in New Japan by the same author, published in 1895. This essay was written as a step of Lafcadio Hearn’s (which was a professor and researcher in Japan between 1890 and 1904) study on the Japanese culture; a research process that held the final fourteen years of his life; and we aim to analyze it herenot only to observe and interpret their partial conclusions about the young people who were their research object at that particular moment (the students of Kumamoto city), as also seen at the end what kind of testimony the study of the author can give us about the historical moment in which it was made, and what kind of effect the official education was having on the way that the studied young people see the world.
