“Morte e vida Severina”: a cartography between sounds, images and education in the TV miniseries

Abstract

This article examines the version of “Morte e vida Severina”, originally written by João Cabral de Melo Neto, adapted into a special miniseries produced by TV Globo in 1981. We aim to understand certain sound-musical parameters and concepts, as well as the imagery present in this work, as possibilities for music and visual education. To this end, we ask how the music, sounds, and images were produced in this cultural product and what they might teach us. This is a qualitative research study, methodologically inspired by cartography, using as data construction procedures the partial breakdown (decoupage) of the audiovisual production and analysis according to the documentary method of image analysis. We consider that the cinematographic, sound, and musical languages that make up the audiovisual production contribute not only to the aesthetic conception of the work but also enable crossings that affect us—provoking in the viewers a range of feelings, emotions, and sensations that actively participate in our visual, sound, aesthetic, and sensitive education.
