This paper presents the first notes on the research that is underway regarding the ethnic boundaries among the first occupants of the current state of São Paulo. The aim of the paper is to present and discuss the applied methodology. It is linked to a PhD project entitled “Arqueologia Paulista e o marcador cerâmico como delimitador de fronteira étnica: um estudo da região sul do estado de São Paulo”. The objectives are to organize an extensive bibliographical review to allow the construction of maps and then to identify the ethnic boundaries between the basins of the Tietê and Paranapanema Rivers, as northern and southern boundaries, respectively. In this way we seek to understand the occupation processes by ceramist populations.
