This is an study of the ingredients, equipments, consumption and preparation techniques of alcoholic beverages among the Tupinamba and the Guarani, based on 16th and 17th-century texts and on data obtained from the analysis of archaeological vessels. The aim of this paper, besides the analysis of material culture, is to stimulate research into the social context of consumption of alcoholic beverages.
