Twilled and twilled techniques of the Kaschuyana Indians of the Brazilian Northeast

In this article, the author Dascha Detering provides a descriptive and iconographic overview of interweaving techniques used by Katxuyana Amerindians from her study of the collection of the Museum of Popular Art in Hamburg (Germany). She reports that to this data she supplemented information from a visit and study of the Kaschúyana collection preserved at the National Museum of Denmark (Copenhagen). Other information, she obtained through conversations with G. Polykrates and a letter from Protásio Frikel. In this article, the author describes in detail the stages of making different basket artifacts, such as baskets, drapes, shakers and the braided base for tchimátchima feather. In the end, the author points out the accelerated process of “acculturation” of the Katxuyana and other groups in the region, which would justify working with products from their “traditional culture”.
