A highlighted space: debate about Turdetania’s urbanization studies

This article outlines the urbanization of the southwestern Iberian Peninsula in the late first millennium BC. For this purpose, the text starts from an excerpt of Strabo’s Geography, a 1st century BC author. His description of Turdetania brings two aspects that raise important debates, two of which will be discussed here. The first concerns the definition of Turdetania as χώρα and its translation as ‘space’; the second, in turn, concerns the idea of Turdetania having an “incomparable number of cities” and this being one of its main qualities. In this regard, the article interrogates the historiography that studies this space and analyzes it from these perspectives, using the urbanization process as a guideline.
