This article explores the scope and limits of two concepts currently fundamental to study the ancient world: the Mediterranean and the ancient city. Both are usually presented as alternatives to the grand narratives centered on the History of Greece and Rome, as new units of study. The paper explores their conceptual scope and its limits, considering the dual lens of unity and diversity in the study of human societies.
