In Riso e melancolia, Sérgio Paulo Rouanet enlightens the special literary qualities of Machado de Assis compared to European writers he read. Their varied expressions of melancholy and comichal qualities are complementary to the work of the Brazilian master. In this essay, starting with the book by Rouanet, we put forward instances of Machado’s originality, on the light of the authors he quotes in his work.
