Since the end of the 1980s, religious education taught in Brazilian public schools has undergone extensive revisions in terms of its official objectives, which now include the mission of instilling in students respect for the country’s cultural and religious diversity, given that such an attitude would be indispensable for building citizenship. In order to analyze these changes in scope, the focus of the investigation is on religious education classes formatted by the Department of Education of the state of Paraná, which has been considered by actors in the educational field itself to be a pioneering reference in outlining an initially ecumenical and then inter-religious profile for this school subject.
