Abstract

Starting from the ideal of the Perfect Library as an emulation of Cicero’s Perfect Orator, this article examines Johann Adam Hiller’s Kritischer Entwurf einer musikalischen Bibliothek [Critical Sketch for a Musical Library, 1768], published in twelve issues of his periodical. It argues that Hiller shifts the concept of the library from accumulation to critique, proposing a selective model of works – books, journals, and musical scores – aimed primarily at the educated amateur. The analysis of the practical sections reveals the centrality of the keyboard (with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach as a model of authority), as well as the hierarchy that privileges German over Italian authors and the convergence with the taste cultivated at the court of Frederick II, the Great. The study concludes that Hiller’s project constitutes a rhetorical exercise in the formation of taste in eighteenth-century northern Germany.
