Abstract

In the end of 1893, Eduardo Prado stirred quite a buzz in the Brazilian intellectual and political scene when he published The American Illusion, which was immediately confiscated by the government of Floriano Peixoto, who wanted to avoid spurring clashes with the American government. In 1899, Oliveira Lima published In the United States, a work which was clearly supportive of America. Between those two works, the young Adolfo Caminha published his In the Country of the Yankees, an account of the trip he took as an ensign on the Almirante Barroso, in an official visit to New Orleans and New York. Those works, along with some chronicles by Olavo Bilac and the criticism by José Veríssimo, tone down the historical Brazilian Francophilia and bring into it an alternative pointing to the English language universe
