Brazilian popular songs went through numerous changes in the 1960s. Back then various music groups and intellectuals influenced the way of thinking and making music in Brazil. Among those groups with distinctive music languages, critics and musicologists valued some musical movements over others; and such value scale oriented the studies conducted on those phenomena for a long time. Thus, bossa nova, jovem guarda [young guard] and tropicália were highly valued as musical movements in MPB [Brazilian popular music]. Due to such high valuation of those movements, however, one group has fallen into oblivion: the Clube da Esquina [Corner Club]. Although they have influenced the way Brazilian music is made and understood as such, the Clube da Esquina, made up of musicians from Minas Gerais state, has never been studied or treated as a unique movement, not only for their aesthetic creations but also for their very important vanguard elements that resonated on popular music, both national and international. These musicians brought about many momentous and groundbreaking elements; many of which have become regular and "traditional" in MPB. This text aims at placing Clube da Esquina inside the context of MPB, by showing that their innovations and procedures place them among the most important musical movements of Brazilian popular music.Downloads
