This study analyzes The Simpsons animated series - a sitcom in cartoon format appealing to both adult and juvenile audiences - as a television program featuring criticisms which lampoon contemporary society. The Simpsons show was chosen as the object of our study because it is a milestone in the history of television for being the longest running primetime comedy series; and also because it has spurred the primetime comeback of cartoons more oriented to an adult audience. When analyzing the series, we can see that some of its main characteristics are the meta-texts, satires and critiques to society, as well as a self-criticism towards the series itself or towards the medium in which it is transmitted.Downloads
