This essay seeks to retrace Antonio Candido’s relations with the AngloAmerican critical tradition of the decades between 1920 and 1950, with particular emphasis on the contributions of New Criticism, whose principles and technique of close reading represented an important addition to the Brazilian critic’s critical agenda. New Criticism’s formalism, however, is subject to the scrutiny of a position informed by History and Sociology, resulting in Candido’s proposal of a dialectically integrated interpretation of literary works.
