Abstract

This article presents a comparative table contrasting the recommendations from the report on torture by the Special Rapporteur Nigel Rodley during his visit to Brazil in 2000 and what was reported — over 15 years later — by members of the National Mechanism for Preventing and Combating Torture upon their visit to places of detention throughout the country. Such comparison makes it clear torture in Brazil not only has not subsided, but it has also deepened and taken roots in everyday practices perpetrated by institutions and agents of the Brazilian state.
