In this article, I aim to select and discuss some aspects of the historical process of political independence of Guyana, formerly English Guiana, which occurred in 1966, and Suriname, formerly Dutch Guiana, which occurred in 1975. The conjuncture of the second half of twentieth century, the multiethnic formation of each society and the traditions arising from non-Iberian metropolises are striking aspects for the differences in relation to other processes of independence in South American countries.
