Abstract

This article deals with the evolution of studies on sociability as enabled by information technologies; from the early studies of the 1970’s – the prehistoric times of internet – up to the latest studies on online social networks. It proposes the division into periods, into three generations of research, by following up on the development and spread of technologies and the rise in understanding of what happened online, and on how that affected other aspects of the lives of the users. Throughout the time it is possible to notice a movement of researchers around the higher or lesser articulation of the online and offline aspects of the studied phenomena until when integrating the plans has almost become common sense.
