Abstract

In this article, an analysis is made of the evolution of the electric energy production system, whose grid was until recently mostly based on hydroelectric power, and which served well the needs of the country up to the end of the 20th century. Shifting away from the building of big reservoirs to keep pace with the growth in generation has rendered the system vulnerable to climate changes and pluvial precipitation, and that has led to an increasing use of coalfired power by the system, which now boasts thermal power stations accounting for about 30% of all energy production. The expansion of generation of electricity using renewable energy sources (biomass, wind, solar) is advanced as one solution to this problem.
