Abstract

Displacements and intercultural contact present deep subjective challenges both for migrants and receiving societies. Immigration and refuge entail institutional changes the country must be prepared for. Although there are successful immigrant-receiving initiatives, we also witness situations of discriminating, stigmatizing and pathologizing situations in a society commonly seen as hospitable. Based on our research at USP and Unifesp on intercultural psychological assistance and counseling to immigrants, returnees and refugees, we present the development of a new model for understanding the migratory phenomenon, the intercultural psychodynamic approach, and case studies to illustrate it.
