After giving a general account of postgraduate courses in education developed in Brazil since 1965, the article concentrates on the process of redefinition and restructuring of the masters and doctoral programmes, started in the 80s. Taking curricular flexibility, interdisciplinatiry and the integration of teaching and research as fundamental principles, these courses overcome the curricular structure based on areas of concentration, strongly centred on teaching, and organize themselves in thematic nuclei, based on lines o research. The text emphasizes the importance of the creation of new doctoral programs in the area of education, and the revaluing of specialization curses.Downloads
