Spatial Distribution of Femicides in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil

Abstract

Femicide is the ultimate expression of gender-based violence against women. It is a complex phenomenon whose true spatial dimension is often masked by underreporting, especially in large urban centers. With the objective of unveiling this hidden geography, this study analyzed the spatial distribution of femicides in Manaus-Amazonas, Brazil. The research, ecological and cross-sectional in nature, was based on 151 cases registered at the Legal Medical Institute from 2018 to 2020, georeferencing the victim's residence and the crime scene. The analysis reveals that femicide follows a defined, non-random, socio-spatial pattern, as the North and East zones, areas of marked social vulnerability, concentrated more than half of the cases (51.7%). The home was confirmed as the epicenter of the violence (49.7%), constituting a hyperlocal danger pattern. This study contributes to the territorial diagnosis, which demands integrated public policies for security, health, social assistance, and urban planning to protect women.
