Abstract

The Saturnino de Brito Sanitation Plan for Santos enabled the expansion of the city, constituting its most important urban reference. Its canal system has consolidated an excellent sanitary standard in new urbanized areas. But with the industrialization of Brazil, Santos grew rapidly, again worsening its sanitary conditions. This situation resulted in a change in the operation of the system, in the 1990s, in principle recovering the beaches’ bathability. However, sanitary conditions have worsened again, resulting in rejection of channels by sectors of society. Thus, it is tried to evidence the importance of the preservation of the channels, making possible to recover the environmental excellence of the city.
