labyrinthine urbanism, unitary urbanismAbstract
The article discusses the labyrinthine structure as an expression of the dialectical relationship between the city and the ways of life of societies. The arguments are based on the analysis of three different concepts of a labyrinth: the mystic-religious, the enlightenment, and the “unitary”. While the first two concepts are linked to the classicist interpretation of the labyrinth, present in the passage from medieval to bourgeois everyday life, relating aspects of uniformity, homogeneity, symmetry, order, and discipline, the “unitary” is linked to the organic and qualitative conditions of natural life, in the absence of any functional division of space, and in a way of life based on the free expression of human senses.
