This essay aims to discuss the importance of regional identity in the setting of tourism clusters. As one of the essential features in the definition of a cluster is its geographical size, regional identity becomes an important component to understanding their formation and development. One must consider, however, that this identity involves both the identity of the region and regional identity (or regional consciousness) of its inhabitants. The identity of the region refers to its environmental, economic and socio-cultural characterization. Regional consciousness, in turn, refers to the knowledge that people have of the region and its boundaries and also their emotional attachment to the region, solidarity with the other members and also the willingness to act on behalf of the region. It is recommended the construction of instruments for measuring regional identity of inhabitants of the regions that harbor tourist clusters. It is also recommended building grounded theories for knowledge of regional identity from the perspective of its actors.Downloads
