In Brazil, the management of environmental impacts caused by the tourism industry usually occurs too late in the planning process. Therefore the encouragement of tourism activities usually precedes the planning process. This discussion highlights the call for using a tool that provides opportunity for environmental impact assessment in more strategic situations like policies, plans and programs. This study presents Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) as a tool used for strategic assessment of tourism environmental impacts and highlights possibilities for its application in tourism planning, presenting a case study conducted in the town of Brandão Bueno, MG. Considering locally gathered information, this study offers contributions and recommendations for possible implementation of strategic environmental assessment within Brazilian local context.Downloads
