Challenges on the consolidation of a tourist destination: a preliminary case study on the city of São Paulo

This preliminary study describes and reflects upon how São Paulo is being structured through actions carried out by the official city tourism board, São Paulo Turismo, in the hopes of consolidating a diversified tourist destination that meets the needs of both business travelers and visitorswhose main motivation is leisure. It presents general statistics relating to
tourism and discusses the obstacles and difficulties that must be overcome to develop tourism in the city. It focuses on "Destination São Paulo" explicitly analyzing SP Turismo's strategic actions targeting both the product and communication, which were carried out in 2005, and the results of said actions. The greatest challenges are considered to be making São Paulo a global city and managing tourism locally in an integrated and responsible manner based the "tripod" public sector, private sector and university; as well as developing innovative, original, differentiated and themed products that meet the needs of market niches and generate economic value.
