Abstract

In Brazil, especially in academic discussions on tourism began to take shape just over two decades, however, in the sphere of government has not yet matured to the point of adopting tourism as a strategically important sector in a meaningful agenda development. In the early 1990s is set in Brazil, the Tourism Development Programme (PRODETUR) directed the Northeast region with the aim, among others to induce economic development through tourism. In 2008, PRODETUR replaced by national coverage and can meet all the states and cities with over 1 million inhabitants. Thus, the aim of this paper is to present the investment PRODETUR in Santa Luzia do Itanhy-SE, to identify potential tourism in the municipality and outline strategies for local economic development through tourism, looking to control the use of natural resources.
