Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the dimensions of Burnout syndrome in academic students of the Occupational Therapy course of a federal university in the northeast of Brazil. This was an exploratory study with descriptive cross-sectional and quantitative correlations, carried out with 147 students from the first to the eighth period of the course. For the data collection, the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey (MBI-SS) instrument was applied; and a sociodemographic questionnaire prepared by the authors. The Excel 2007 and SPSS programs were used for the statistical treatment of the data, and an exploratory factorial analysis was performed to obtain the scores of the dimensions of the syndrome for later comparison between the periods. The results obtained indicated the highest scores in the Emotional Exhaustion and Disbelief dimensions in the 4th period of the course. The Professional Inefficiency presented a high median value of the scores in the final years of the course, indicating a trend that these students feel competent as academics. Although the results do not indicate the presence of Burnout Syndrome, however, it is discussed the transformation of the Pedagogical Project of the Course, aimed at improving the quality of life of the students and the promotion of the profession /course between health professionals and the community.
