Reference is given to the Project of Minimum Patterns of the Brazilian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology / 88, the Sanitary Vigilance Project SUDS-SP-89, the nr. 810 Regulation from the Ministry of Health / 89, and the "Third Age Health Macropolitics for 1991" from the Ministry of Social Affairs, in order to present proposals of minimum patters for the operation of these institutions, giving priority to those institutions with the "shelter" function. The different institutions are characterized and technical-administrative proposals of physical area and installations, and human resources are presented in the sense of humanizing the institutions, giving quality to the life of the institutionalized older person.
