The objective of this paper is to discuss the perspectives to create a graduate program in occupational therapy at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). The author presents both an overview of the main difficulties related to the creation of graduate programs in Federal Universities and a discussion of issues that are specific to the profession, such as the need to strengthen research, the definition of specific areas of inquiry and problems related to research funding. Although this work is based on an individual perspective, centered on a situation that is specific to UFMG, the ideas presented could be useful to subsidize similar discussions in other universities.
