This article discusses the influence of Juqueri - that used to be the largest psychiatric hospital complex in Brazil - on the cultural and identity fonnation of the residents of the town of "Franco da Rocha". This asylum of insane that commemorates its centenary in 1998 has deeply
determined the destiny and the deveiopment of the small village where it was settled and that, nowadays, is a city. Juqueri was, until the 70,h decade, the tow^s major political institute, setting up the social, economical and cultural relationships, besides the community organization that has grown up around the asylum and madness. Based on interviews made with "Franco da Rocha" citizens, we have been trying to find the way this cultural influence had happened and its social consequences at this city until now.
