Abstract

Leonid Andreyev was one of the most popular and controversial Russian writers of the first decade of the twentieth century. The diversity of styles so peculiar in his short stories, novels and plays makes the writer to be considered as a lone figure in the historical and literary context, difficult to be tied to any particular movement, but that represents a period of changes in Russian literature. Among the short stories of his first book, published in 1901, is The Little Angel, which features an episode in the life of Sachka, a humble boy expelled from school for misbehaviour, but who is still invited to the Christmas party of his benefactors. At first a conventional realistic narrative, the short story subtly touches the boundaries of symbolism, where the real and the ideal lead to the picture of the human condition that outlines all the work of Andreyev
