Abstract

These memories were written by the Russian actor Michael Chekhov (1891-1955) after the death of his theater master Leopold Antonovich Sulerzhitsky  (1872-1916). Throughout the text, the beneficial influence that the teacher had on his student's creative individuality becomes evident. Some of the main experiences lived by the actor are also brought up within the small experimental space known as the First Studio of the Moscow Art Theater (MAT). The relevance of these memories is not only in reaffirming the existing confluences between the teacher and his apprentice, but also in demonstrating how much the First Studio – opened in 1912 by Leopold Sulerzhitsky  himself in partnership with the great Russian actor, director and pedagogue Constantin Stanislavski (1863- 1938) – was one of the main drivers of Michael Chekhov's later artistic journey.
