The article proposes a reading of the novel A morte de Ivan Ilitch, of Tolstói, in which important ethical issues are highlighted in the narrative, in particular the problem of existential inauthenticity, in the sartrean perspective. We will seek to reflect on the experience of becoming aware of one's own finitude carried out by the protagonist Ivan Ilych, to an epiphany of what would be the “good life”, as opposed to a life marked by calculation and vanity, ethically condemned in the narrative. To think about the concept of inauthenticity, the text dialogues with sartrean existentialism, in particular his concept of inauthenticity.
