Ivan Búnin's life and work embody one of the essential dilemmas of Russian emigration: the determination to safeguard the Russian cultural heritage and its unity, combined with a continuous, irreversible process of progressive and dynamic integration into a different artistic and cultural context. A close analysis of Bunin's narrative texts leads us, beyond the canons of 'great' nineteenth-century Russian literature, to a textuality that is open to modernity's experimentation, while always preserving a certain essential "Russianness."
