Russian prison prose in the XIX-XX centuries

The tradition of Russian prison prose dates back several centuries of history and represents some invariable features. Among its most significant representatives are writers such as Fyodor Dostoevsky, Anton Chekhov, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Varlam Shalamov, Sergei Dovlatov and others.The purpose of this article is to give a brief overview of the evolution of the genre of prison literature throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as to analyze the common traits that link the Soviet texts to the main works of the nineteenth century. The focus of special interest will be the analysis of the novel The Zone, by the writer Sergei Dovlatov.
