Who is socialist realism’s subject? Art, psychology and labor in 1930’s USSR

The article investigates the relationship between Socialist Realism, psychology, and labor in the Soviet Union within the context of the First Five-Year Plan (1929–1932). Focusing on the historical reconstruction of this articulation, the text explores how official aesthetics translated the notion of psychism developed by official psychology into images. The article also highlights the role of individual portraits in fostering competitiveness and shaping the figure of the "new Soviet man" Finally, it questions the epistemological basis of this cultural construction and its instrumentalization by the regime — drawing primarily from an analysis of Óssip
Beskin’s book, Formalism in Painting (1933).
