Sergei Eisenstein’s 1938 film Alexander Nevsky sought to rehabilitate and reintroduce the thirteenth‑century saint and prince as a national hero, situating him within the patriotic discourses cultivated in the late 1930s in anticipation of the conflict with Nazi Germany, as part of the broader Stalinist cultural project. This study undertakes a concise historical review of Alexander Nevsky’s life and his leadership in the 1242 Battle on the Ice, followed by an analysis of his cinematic representation in Eisenstein’s work. Drawing upon the extant Portuguese‑language scholarship, it aims to elucidate continuities and transformations in the political uses of the prince’s memory across Russian history – from the medieval Rus polity to the Soviet era – thereby tracing the consolidation of a twentieth‑century reinterpretation of his figure through the medium of film.
